1st XI 177 / 4 (42.3)
Saturday 1XI 174 / All out (44.4)
Week seven of the 2022 season saw the Bears first XI visiting the picturesque Purton. Bears were without the timeless class of Chris Bence, Mark “Mark” Gunning, and someone who once opened in the Southern Prem (Tom Harris). However, they welcomed back the Celibacy Expert (Ross Newman), Paul Stirling (Jay Morris) and the South’s best pest removal man, if the pest is small, buzzes and is not a bee.
The Bears won the toss and elected to bat first on a used track that looked like it would get slower. The Bears started solidly with Wilson and Lear, the former making a lovely 62. Unfortunately the other end wasn’t quite so aesthetic, once Lear got out the flow of wickets never got dammed. Despite some resistance from the in-form Staves, the Bears could only stutter to a below par 174 all out.
The bowling innings started in a miserly fashion, everyone’s favourite quiz show specialist’s partner was on terrific form, proving that the Bears efforts would not be Pointless, bowling plenty Golden Balls, but not taking any much deserved wickets during the run Chase. Despite keeping it tight the Bears couldn’t break through, until Toby Reeves broke through, taking 3 important wickets. Sadly it was not to be for the Bears who couldn’t stop some smart batting and running from the home side who eventually made it home, 6 wicket winners.
On to next week as the 1XI takes on Marlborough at home in a must win game.
